This position researches, writes and reports compelling journalism that reaches and expands audiences by informing and engaging readers on the topics of health care in a role that crosses into and over several tradition newsroom beats to tell the stories of people and the impact of our city's and community's impact on them.
The reporter acts as a public ambassador through community outreach and connects with readers in person and through social media. He/she provides thoughtful analysis of complex issues including, but not limited to public health trends, healthy/unhealthy habits, mental health, environmental concerns, hospital/patient/nursing home safety and quality of life access disparities. He/she produces watchdog journalism that leads to change.
The reporter works with the content coach and content strategists to shape storytelling to meet audience needs and interests.


  • Creates content (articles, videos, photos and social media posts) about local news that accurately informs, entertains and engages key audiences and platforms through the use of metrics.
  • Provides thoughtful analysis of complex issues.
  • Works toward becoming the community's leading voice in area of social justice.
  • Plans and executes engagement opportunities to reach audiences through content, community events and social media.
  • Connects with the community through outreach (social media, on camera, forums, community leadership, etc.).
  • Works with coach and content strategist to evaluate what's working and what's not, and develops ongoing plans to better satisfy audience needs.
  • Collaborates with content team to provide all appropriate elements for stories (i.e. photos, videos and graphics).
  • Produces photos and video from events and beat coverage.
  • Promotes personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand.
  • Coaches and mentors less-experienced journalists.
  • Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
  • Manages others in the newsroom at times and serves as a Content Coach / Editor.

    • Knows how to use time effectively in a 24-hour news environment.
    • Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment.

    • Has command of spelling, grammar and AP and local style.
    • Is knowledgeable about the news Industry.
      • Bachelor's in communications, journalism or equivalent in experience and education.
      • Five years' experience developing a personal brand and audience base, and experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
      • News reporting requires off-site and on-location work for coverage assignments and events.
      • News often requires employees to work extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays, sometimes unexpectedly when breaking news occurs.#content
