skills Description: The Surgical Technologist Certified functions
under the direction of the registered professional nurse. Assists
the healthcare team in providing safe and age-appropriate patient
care. Possesses the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform duties
within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical cases.
Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and other members of the
healthcare team. Exhibits an acquisition of additional surgical
skills for progressively more difficult cases. Demonstrates an
efficient and organized surgical plan for assigned cases. Takes
initiative to discuss surgical plans with other members of the
healthcare team. Can troubleshoot instruments and equipment.
Anticipates additional supplies or equipment required for
procedures. Ability to mentor or train in various modalities.
Participates in performance improvement initiatives. Duties include
preparation of the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a
safe patient care environment. Maintains the sterile field and
other patient safety concerns. Gathers required instruments and
supplies and serves as surgical assistant as needed. Assists with
inventory, ordering, and stocking of surgical areas as assigned.
Ensures compliance with standards at all times. Call or late
coverage may be required. Core Responsibilities and Essential
Functions: Possesses the knowledge, skill, and ability of the
procedure being performed. Checks supplies and equipment needed for
surgical procedure. Assists with room set-up including opening of
sterile supplies. Sets up sterile tables with instruments,
supplies, equipment, and medications needed for procedures.
Conducts appropriate surgical counts with the circulator. Actively
participates in procedure pause/time-out. Scrubs, gowns, and
gloves; gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants. Assists in draping
the sterile field. Passes instruments to the surgeon during the
procedure. Maintains an organized back table and operative field.
Anticipates and offers suggestions to facilitate cases. Maintains
highest standards of sterile technique during procedures. Prepares
sterile dressings. Participates in post-procedure pause, including
accounting for proper handling of specimens. Cleans and prepares
instruments for terminal sterilization. Applies principles of
asepsis to ensure the prevention of infection. Prepares case carts
according to procedures and preference cards. Observes patients'
conditions and promptly reports significant changes to supervising
staff. Proactively plans for the next steps in the procedure.
Prepares surgical rooms and other areas for receiving patients.
Maintains financial stewardship related to supplies and equipment.
Assists the healthcare team in providing patient-centered care.
Adapts service delivery to reflect understanding of cultural
diversity. Verifies procedures with patients and conducts bedside
shift reports. Practices using current clinical standards under the
supervision of registered professionals. Upholds all policies and
procedures as well as regulatory and accreditation requirements.
Supports evidence-based practice and ethical accountability.
Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration in a fiscally responsible
manner. Serves as a patient advocate concerning care and safety.
Assists with terminal cleaning of rooms between cases. Prepares
rooms for the next patient. Assists in transporting patients.
Provides comfort and safety measures for specific age groups of
patients. Participates in performance improvement initiatives and
seeks process improvement opportunities. Maintains a positive
attitude and flexibility in assignments. Practice Development:
Completes all initial and annual competencies and required
education. Strives to incorporate standards of behavior into daily
work activities. Participates in training related to new policies,
processes, or equipment. Mentors or precepts students and new
employees. Implements new processes or equipment effectively.
Maintains continuing education relevant to the field. Other Duties:
Supports licensed staff as requested. Maintains organization and
cleanliness of the surgical area. Ensures stock and medical supply
levels are adequate. Assumes responsibility for additional duties
