What You Will Do :
Assist in adapting National Weather Service's (NWS) Metrological
Development Lab (MDL) software system to include, ingest, and store
observations and model data for statistical analysis.
Assist with creating new or improving existing probabilistic
guidance for use in or by the National Blend of Models (NBM)
Perform a variety of programming and data processing assignments
associated with upgrading the LAMP system as input into the NWS
NBM.
Produce an archive of the data for use in development and testing
of the system.
Modify NWS MDL's software as necessary for developing statistical
equations and thresholds.
Evaluate the results of the developed equations and thresholds to
determine improvement.
Assist with the implementation of upgraded systems.
Assist with making the new guidance available for use in the
NBM.
Incumbent will perform other assignments and duties as
required.
Test the code and evaluating the updated products; and assist with
writing documentation and preparing presentations.
Assist MDL scientists with writing documentation and preparing
presentations.
What You Will Need :
Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Physical Science, or Computer
Programming.
2-8 years' experience in related area Software Development
In lieu of degree, additional 4 years of experience is required
2-8 years of experience in Unix or Linux shell scripts
2-8 years of experience in FORTRAN or other computer programming
languages
2-8 years of experience with Python programming
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
Exceptional customer service skills.
Strong time-management and prioritization skills.
Ability to communicate applicable technical matters to management
and others.
Applicants must be a Permanent Resident or US Citizen
Must be able to pass the government background investigation
What Would Be Nice To Have :
Master's degree in Meteorology
Knowledge of the principles of meteorology and weather
forecasting.
Experience with GIS packages (e.g., ArcGIS).
Experience with image display software for displaying
meteorological fields.
Experience with Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML)
principles and techniques
Basic knowledge of statistics, including familiarity with
statistical methods used in atmospheric sciences (i.e. linear
regression, typical verification scores).
Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
Experience working on supercomputers.
Experience with software version control such as subversion or
git.
Knowledge of National Weather Service operations, products, and
services.
Existing favorable Tier 1 adjudication is highly desirable to
facilitate NWS supercomputer access.
The annual salary range for this position is
$75,000.00-$112,500.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide
range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets,
experience and training, security clearances, licensure and
certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
