Science Content StrategistUniversity of Georgias Savannah River Ecology LaboratoryThe University of Georgias Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL) invites applications for a Science Content Strategist. The successful applicant will be located at the SREL in Aiken, S.C. and will report to the Assistant Director for Outreach and Education. This position will consist of a variety of functions in science writing and marketing. This is a highly responsible position requiring the development of SREL Research, Education, and Outreach materials and content for distribution to the general public, funding agencies, and other stakeholders through the production of social media, print, and other media sources.Science Writing: The successful candidate will serve as the science writer for the SREL. They will craft a variety of publications for print and digital formats. Their writing will act as a bridge between researchers at SREL and stakeholders, the general public, and a wide audience. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and editing skills. Some publications, they will create might include press releases, internal and external newsletters, annual reports, educational flyers, and content for local media and stakeholder publications. This position also is expected to engage in significant interaction with colleagues and students across the scientific disciplines represented at SREL, UGA, and the broader academic community.Online Content Creation: SREL operates active social media channels on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube. The successful candidate will grow SRELs social media presence and consider emerging ways to meet its diverse audience. They will act as the lead for the social media team and will be responsible for creating plans, campaigns, and managing an active editorial calendar. The candidate will acquire, adapt, and post SREL research, education, and outreach content on all SREL social media platforms and coordinate with other members of the SREL outreach team on content production. In addition to creating social media content, they will also collaborate with other members of the outreach team to create content for the labs YouTube channel. The role also requires management of SRELs website utilizing a WordPress-based platform.Outreach: This position is part of the SREL outreach team. The successful candidate will assist as needed with large-scale special events and other outreach opportunities. They will also serve on various related committees and projects as the need arises.Qualifications: The successful applicant will possess the following qualifications:

  • Capacity to analyze scientific data and present it in a clear, coherent manner that is understandable to a broader audience
  • Capability to coordinate and multitask various activities and prioritize certain tasks to meet deadlines
  • A history of taking part in scientific organizations and teams
  • Authoring and managing the production of scientific documents
  • Keeping up-to-date on scientific breakthroughs
  • The ability to recognize a hot topic and proactively present it to our audience

  • Working knowledge of Office Suite, Canva, Buffer, Adobe Creative Suite, and other applications

  • Ability to work collaborativelyApplicants must have graduated from an accredited college or university with major course work in any area of Ecology or Environmental Sciences and considerable experience in the development of materials for distribution to the general public for social or print media. Previous experience with the development of science-based content for social media platforms is also required.Preferred qualifications:
    • MS Degree with 3 years of relevant experience
    • Experience with videography and photographySavannah River Ecology Laboratory: The successful candidate will be located at the SREL in Aiken, SC. The SREL is a research unit of the University of Georgia located on the 300 mi2 Savannah River Site, a Department of Energy facility near Aiken, SC. With a staff of over 190 faculty members, postdocs, research professionals, technicians, and graduate students, the laboratory pursues basic and applied research at multiple levels of ecological organization, from atoms to ecosystems. SREL also provides opportunities for graduate and undergraduate research training, and service to the community through environmental outreach. Throughout its 70+ year history SREL has strived to acquire and communicate knowledge that contributes to sound ecological stewardship.Application: To ensure full consideration, candidates must submit a cover letter, resume or curriculum vitae, unofficial transcripts of all college-level work, a science writing sample that demonstrates their style and ability, and contact information for three references.
